After working as an eighth-grade paraprofessional at Champaign’s Edison Middle School for 15 years, Gwenetta Posey was introduced to the school district’s “Grow Your Own” teacher program. The Chicago native graduated from Millikin University in 2009 and has taught at Dr. Howard Elementary School ever since.

I find my work important because ... I am able to build meaningful relationships that create a safe, supportive and inclusive classroom community. Also, I have been able to guide students through their challenges, celebrate their growth and help them become lifelong learners.

I became a teacher because ... I feel every child deserves to have someone who will support their growth, inspire their love of learning and help prepare them for the next step in their academic learning.

My favorite or most unique lesson that I teach is ... our civil-rights wax museum, where students step into the shoes of historical figures and bring history to life for their peers and families. This lesson encourages students to think critically and make real-world connections.

My most fulfilling moments on the job are when ... the students are eager to plan and present a morning-meeting slide show to the classroom and invite their parents.

I keep students engaged by ... fostering a supportive, positive classroom environment where curiosity is encouraged and every student feels heard. In addition, I am able to create hands-on activities, encourage discussions and give them opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

Something else I’m passionate about is ... spending time with my family, friends and Labrador retrievers, and gardening.

My favorite teacher was ... Mrs. Caldwell at Isaac Newton Elementary School in Chicago. She was my fifth-grade teacher and taught me how to multiply and divide.

If I weren’t a teacher, I would be ... a plant nursery owner. I enjoy repotting, growing and watering plants.
