A teacher, a thought partner, a collaborator, a resource finder, a data collector, a co-teacher. Instructional coaches are teachers. Classroom teaching experience provides the foundation for the work that coaches do. Unlike behavior coaches, literacy coaches, math coaches, and other specialist coaches, instructional coaches focus on best instructional practices that work for any content area and any grade level. We combine our knowledge of instruction with the content-area expertise of the classroom teachers to plan and deliver highly effective lessons to increase student learning.
WHAT IS OUR PHILOSOPHY OF COACHING?
Several experts in the field have influenced our philosophy of coaching. Our work centers on Jim Knight’s impact cycle and partnership principles. We also rely on Diane Sweeney’s student-centered coaching model to document the effect of coaching. While we rely heavily on Knight’s and Sweeney’s works, we also draw from other experts in the field: Elena Aguilar, Jennifer Abrams, Jane Kise, and Joellen Killion.
We believe that coaches and teachers are collaborative partners, that we both bring expertise to the coaching relationship.
We believe that all teachers deserve a coach. Coaches are not “fixers.” We build off teachers’ strengths. We support teachers at all points in their careers: new teachers, professionals new to teaching, and veteran teachers; core content teachers, special education teachers, specials teachers, and CTE teachers; teachers who want to improve their practice to positively affect student achievement. WHAT TIME COMMITMENT DOES COACHING REQUIRE FROM A TEACHER?
Typically, coaching cycles last 4-9 weeks. They can be shorter or longer depending on the teacher’s goal and desire to dig deeper into the work. Ideally, a coach and teacher meet to analyze data and plan at least once a week. Typically, the coach visits the teacher’s classroom at least once a week to collect data, co-teach, and whisper or signal coach.
What support does ROE SchoolWorks provide for instructional coaches in the area?
We hold quarterly networking meetings that typically begin in September. See our networking flyer for dates and times. Each meeting runs two hours, and the attendees set the agenda. MEET OUR INSTRUCTIONAL COACH!
Leslie was a high school English teacher for nine years. During her tenure, she wore a variety of hats: teacher mentor, school improvement team member, Student Assistance Program team member, and homebound teacher. She advised multiple student organizations. She also developed and revised curriculum and aligned assessments with standards to evaluate student growth data. Leslie has worked as an instructional coach with ROE SchoolWorks since 2018. Since then, she has coached over a hundred teachers from pre-k to high school and just about every content area.
Leslie and her husband, also an educator, raise their two young children in Champaign. She spends most of her time baking, exploring her community, and listening to live music. She has also been an assessment writer for online learning companies and a standardized assessment grader.
