NIU STEAM Works will model a STEM Read event with educators. They will take the role of the student and experience what it is like to live the book through a themed field trip. During lunch and into the afternoon, the STEM Read team will walk participants through our philosophy and share how we develop activities and challenges based on engaging literature. Whether educators simply want to incorporate more STEAM activities into their current curriculum or incorporate an entire interdisciplinary unit, they will come away from this session with new, actionable ideas for energizing students and for implementing the New Illinois science standards. The STEM Read team will also present strategies for using these activities to engage reluctant and struggling readers, especially those identified for interventions through special education, Title I, or English Language Learning. The activities make content ‘come alive’ in ways that can translate to real world learning in classrooms. STEM Read’s focus on authentic assessment highlights the need to support more critical thinking and real-world activities aligned to the new standards.
